I like to think of myself as a very organized person. As soon as I acquired a few hair products at the begining of my hair journey, I purchased a drawer set for them and in the last 3 years, the drawers have never failed me. In fact the only issue I’ve had with them is the lack of space sometimes and as a result I’ve had to curb my instinctual product junkie-ism.
The bottles full of liquid stuff are stored laying on their sides and I’ve never had a problem with leakage in that time. About a month ago however, I noticed that my castor oil had leaked completely to the bottom of one of the drawers. It was annoying and I assumed that I must have left the bottle cap slightly open.
Since then, the floodgates have opened, literally. My henna powder spilled, my s curl leaked as did my glycerin. I can’t explain this sudden change but the cleanup was horrendous. Most if not all my bottles were slimy and slippery so everything had to washed out. It was an annoying and tedious job and in the interest of never having it happen again I decided to look for a more ‘upright’ storage solution.
I looked at the salon trolleys on offer but I was underwhelmed with the selection. First off I’m pretty sure that I have no need for something with wheels. My daughter will just think it’s a toy and make a mess, as 3 year olds are genetically programmed to do.
I also noticed that with a lot of them you would have to put your larger bottles on their sides anyway which defeats the purpose. In the end I opted for a deep bookcase. Odd selection I know but there’s a method to my madness. Bookcases have so much room (which means I will be able to indulge a bit more in product exploration) plus it looks nice and matches the stuff in my bedroom.
After the decision was made, I promptly popped out to purchase the bookcase and put it together myself (no help from my husband) with smug satisfaction at the finished results.
Also, having a Monica from Friends moment, I had a massive clearout of the hair products that I don’t use often enough (Jasmine hair oil with mineral oil as the first ingredient? What was I thinking!). There’s plenty of room for expansion with my newly shrunken stash and I guess that’s a positive.
I still grin like a Cheshire cat when I see my handiwork, it’s actually not the first time I’ve bought something and used it for a completely different purpose. This is a clothes rail that I bought to hold my handbags and old gift bags.
An organized home, an organized mind is my new motto!
